Will we see the Nivellois once more on the lists, or will the PS Walloon Brabant have to do without its biggest voice maker? “I am content to observe, for the moment, limit myself to commenting on the Minister of State. I have not been asked anything. People are positioning themselves, making declarations. I am observing. And I have passed the age of begging. If I’m not asked for anything, I’m not going to grovel.”
“An attitude to favor personal careers rather than the general interest”
The heads of the socialist lists in the federal elections, as later in the regional and provincial elections, will be designated by universal suffrage of the members of the Walloon Brabant PS. And nothing prevented André Flahaut from being a candidate. But we can imagine that the Nivellois, who cannot be described as partridge of the year, is well aware that the support of the local Rebecquoise and Tubizienne gives a probably decisive advantage to the Rebecquois Dimitri Legasse.
“What I remember is this attitude to favor personal careers rather than projects or the general interest. Yes, the election (of the head of the list) will be by universal suffrage. This is indisputable. But I’m curious to see how many members will vote. Those who carried out this operation will have to assume the consequences. Because, sometimes, we pick ourselves up.”
“His only motivation for choosing the Federal is to be able to accumulate”
André Flahaut does not hesitate to attack his successor at the head of the PS federation of Walloon Brabant. This will not surprise observers: the tensions between the two men are only alleviated by the fact that they avoid dialogue. “We have a candidate (Dimitri Legasse) whose only motivation for choosing the federal government is the fact of being able to combine with a mandate as mayor, believes André Flahaut. I am not sure that this is a good message. It gives the impression to put one’s personal interest before the general interest.”
“I’m afraid that the Walloon Brabant PS will fall apart”
As he prepares to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of his first party card, André Flahaut says he is worried: “I’m afraid that the Walloon Brabant PS is falling apart. We won’t make the Walloon Brabant PS progress by falling back on a local or part of Walloon Brabant. Making a list also means thinking regarding the sociology of the territory concerned, it means thinking regarding candidates who will be able to convince voters in the West but also in the center and in ballast.”
We will have understood, André Flahaut hardly appreciates the way in which he is sidelined. Or, at the very least, the way he feels like he’s being sidelined. “There are surely people who are happy to see me out of their way, but there are also some who still support me and who tell me their disappointment.”
The Minister of State, however, is careful not to formally announce that he will not run for the head of the socialist list in Walloon Brabant for the next regional elections.
Applications to occupy this place will be possible from next Monday, the day following the “primaries” for the federal elections. Who will apply? This is not an obligation but nevertheless a wish of the party at the national level: it is recommended to have a woman at the head of the list in the Region when a man already occupies this position at the Federal.
Can the PS afford to leave Flahaut on the sidelines?
Suddenly, all eyes are on Laurence Smets and Anne Lambelin. Team Legasse versus team Flahaut. New tensions in perspective? That might be. Especially since André Flahaut refuses to clarify his intentions: “For the moment, I am observing.”
Can the PS really let André Flahaut “observe”? The socialists do not have a lot of vote-makers. André Flahaut is the most important with nearly 15,000 preferred votes during the elections. Dimitri Legasse then reported almost 9,000 preference votes. The two men were heads of the list, respectively at the federal level and at the Region. They were then both elected. Staying in the top three parties in Walloon Brabant is almost the assurance of once once more having, at least, one elected official in Brussels and one in Namur.
