It’s much too dry in Switzerland
Will the big rain finally come next week?
While some enjoy the height of summer, others suffer from the prolonged dry period. Meteorologists say this is likely to continue for a while. Thunderstorms are expected next week, but they will not ease the situation.
Rarely has Switzerland longed for rain as it is at the moment. Dry rivers, an army that must fly water into the mountains, glaciers that reveal their secrets.
It’s been bone dry for weeks. And that’s likely to stay the case for a while. Although meteorologists reported on Tuesday that there might be prolonged rain showers next week. But now the weather world looks different once more. Dark clouds are gathering. But only a few. “Currently it looks like thunderstorms next Monday,” says Michael Eichmann from MeteoNews to Blick. “After that it will probably be dry once more.”
On Tuesday, the models would have predicted more rain – significantly more. But how can that change so quickly? Eichmann explains: “The models sometimes have problems with low altitudes.” These are areas of low pressure found at higher levels in the atmosphere. The forecasts are sometimes somewhat inaccurate, especially several days in advance. It was similar back then during the heat wave in mid-June. The period lasted longer than the models initially predicted because the high-altitude low off the Iberian Peninsula remained stationary for a long time.
Thunderstorms expected on Monday
The current forecasts show that it will remain very sunny until the weekend, but that the risk of thunderstorms will increase on Sunday. The meteorologist to Blick: “Initially in western Switzerland, in the night on Monday and on Monday the shower and thunderstorm tendency increases everywhere.”
According to the current status, thunderstorms are to be expected on Monday. These would be caused by a trough approaching the Alpine region from the north-west. “But this precipitation is only of little use once morest the drought, and only selectively,” he says. Thunderstorms are not suitable for this anyway, classic land rain, which falls slowly but steadily, would be better. Instead of thunderstorm cells that break out violently but only briefly over certain areas.
Meanwhile, the temperatures remain summerly high: According to the weather expert, the heat mark of 30 degrees will be cracked everywhere on Sunday, at the start of the week the maximum values are slightly lower, between 26 and 28 degrees. (of)
