Smith said, in a statement, that he would “resign from the Academy” and added that he would “accept all consequences” of his behavior, and continued: “My actions at the Academy Awards were shocking, painful and inexcusable.”

“The list of people I’ve hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dearest friends and loved ones, and all the audience and attendees at home,” he said.

On Wednesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that it had “initiated disciplinary action” against Smith.

The Academy said, in a statement, that “Smith was asked to leave the ceremony after the incident, but he refused,” and described Smith’s actions as a “traumatic incident in violation of standards of conduct.”

The academy statement said disciplinary action may include “suspension of membership, expulsion or other sanctions,” and added, “that in line with the Academy’s standards of conduct, as well as California law, Smith will receive at least 15 days’ notice of the outcome of the vote regarding sanctions against him.” and the opportunity to be heard in advance by way of a written response, at the next Board meeting on April 18.”

The Academy continued, “We apologize to Chris Rock for what I experienced and thank you for your resilience in that moment, and also to our nominees, guests and viewers for what happened during what should have been a celebratory event.”
