Will King Mohammed VI travel to Algiers to attend the 31st Arab League summit?

Kiosk360. King Mohammed VI will attend in person the 31st Arab League summit which will take place in Algeria on November 1 and 2. This is at least what the magazine “Jeune Afrique” believes, but also the newspaper “Asharq Al-Awsat” from which this press review is taken.

Are we heading towards a thaw in Moroccan-Algerian relations, or at least towards a respite in the escalation that the Algerian side has continued to impose in recent months on relations between the two neighboring Maghreb giants?

This hypothesis is put forward by the African magazine published in Paris, Young Africawhich announced, in a publication published Monday, September 12 on its site, that “the Moroccan sovereign will personally take part in the summit of the Arab League, in Algiers, on November 1 and 2”.

This visit “might augur a totally new climate of relaxation between Morocco and its Algerian neighbor”, according to Young Africa, who adds that he has learned from very well-informed sources that, on instructions from the highest Moroccan authorities, contacts have been established with several Gulf countries (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, etc.) to inform them that the king Mohammed VI would personally take part in the Algiers summit.

The same information on the probable presence of King Mohammed VI at the Algiers summit and the consultations to this effect with the Gulf countries also appeared on September 12 in the columns of the Arab daily published in London, Asharq Al-Awsat, which cites “authoritative diplomatic sources”.

The Arab media recalls that the Moroccan sovereign last attended an Arab summit in 2005, the one held in Algiers during the era of Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Algeria, which absolutely wants to organize the next Arab League summit, especially on the “symbolic date” of November 1, can thus breathe a sigh of relief on learning that the King of Morocco will enhance the 31st summit with his presence. the Arab League.

For Algeria, the Moroccan lock which seemed to strongly oppose the holding of the next Arab summit at home jumped with this announcement of the presence of King Mohammed VI. Indeed, as well Young Africa thatAsharq Al-Awsat clearly suggest that the presence in Algiers of the leaders of the member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council is dependent, at a high level, on that of Morocco. Rabat “would even have taken steps to encourage the leaders of these States to participate at a very high level in this summit in order to ensure its success”.

While awaiting the Moroccan sovereign’s response to the invitation that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune will soon send him through his emissary, Abderrachid Tebbi, Algerian Minister of Justice, Young Africa wonders “if the royal trip will mark the beginning of a new era in relations between Rabat and Algiers”. What is certain is that the ball is in the court of Algeria, to which King Mohammed VI has never ceased to extend the hand of brotherhood, good neighborliness and fruitful cooperation between neighbours.
