Will give billions of dollars to Danish coastal protection

Will give billions of dollars to Danish coastal protection

The EU must contribute to climate and coastal protection in Denmark.

This is the view of the Liberal Party, which is launching a proposal to introduce a climate protection law in the EU ahead of the EU parliamentary elections. At the same time, Venstre will use EU funds to secure Danish and European homes once morest climate change.

– We face an urgent need to protect Danish homes once morest an increasing number of floods, more violent weather phenomena and extreme downpours.

– The government’s plan for climate adaptation is an important step. But the EU must also step into character. Climate and coastal protection is a problem for many Europeans, says Morten Løkkegaard.

He emphasizes that the EU’s own environment and climate agency, the EEA, also points to the need for closer cooperation between member states on climate protection.

If it’s for the Left, a larger part of the budget for the EU’s LIFE program and structural fund funds must be earmarked for climate protection.

The LIFE program goes to environmental and climate initiatives. Part of the Structural Funds also goes to green transition. In Denmark, according to the Danish Business Authority, the rest goes to innovation, entrepreneurship, education and social inclusion.

Question: Some of the funds go to climate change. Don’t you risk taking away the funds that should be used to combat the problem?

– For us it is not an either or, but a both and. There are double-digit billion amounts in the funds every single year. So there is money. The prioritization is a political discussion, and we start with it here.

– With a Danish coastline of over 5,000 kilometers, there is a clear interest in us also getting a share in the common European budget, says Morten Løkkegaard.

A large part of the money goes to regional development in southern and eastern European countries.

– Denmark has not been in the first place when funds have been distributed, but now we are a nation that needs the money. So it would be a good idea to direct some of them this way, says Morten Løkkegaard.

In order to ensure that climate protection efforts take place throughout the EU, Venstre also proposes that a special EU law be made in this area.

– Just as with the climate effort, it is necessary that some binding objectives are set. Because we are talking regarding large sums, says Morten Løkkegaard.

According to the V-spic candidate, the Climate Protection Act must contain a joint strategy for climate adaptation. The strategy must have a special focus on coastal protection and closer cooperation on climate protection across member states.

– We need a comprehensive plan on how member states can cooperate to prevent flooding from rising seas and chaos in cities during extreme downpours.

– We must coordinate common coastal stretches and address common challenges in protecting critical infrastructure such as ports once morest climate change, says Morten Løkkegaard.

The pool for structural fund funds amounts to 392 billion euros in the budget period from 2021-2027. This corresponds to more than 2900 billion.

In the same period, the LIFE program has a budget of over five billion euros. This corresponds to DKK 37 billion.
