Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky tweeted on the 27th that Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who holds the rotating presidency of the Group of 20 (G20), has invited him to participate in the G20 leaders summit in Indonesia in November this year. Previously, the United States, Canada and other countries called for kicking Russia out of the G20 or at least rejecting Russia’s participation in the G20 meeting, but Indonesia maintains that the G20 is an economic and development forum and continues to avoid taking a stand on the Ukrainian-Russian war or choosing sides.
Zelensky tweeted on the 27th that he had spoken to Jokowi and confirmed that he had been invited by Jokowi to the G20 summit. While Ukraine is not a member of the G20, the group’s rotating presidency has invited other countries to attend meetings as guests in the past. If Zelensky attends the G20 Leaders Summit, he may be on the same stage with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is also a G20 member, at the summit in Indonesia, drawing attention from all walks of life.
Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah did not directly confirm Zelensky’s invitation, but said the Indonesian foreign minister had been “consulting” and reporting the results to Jokowi. He did not specify who he was consulting with. Despite U.S. President Joe Biden’s call to expel Russia from the G20, according to the TASS news agency, Putin still received an invitation from Indonesia. As for whether to participate in the G20 summit, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov (Dmitry Peskov) ), will be subject to availability.
The G20 has condemned Russia’s aggression. Russia has invaded Ukraine for more than two months. Geopolitical tensions continue to deteriorate, impacting the global economy and triggering a humanitarian crisis. Some G20 members have called for Russia and Putin to be excluded from the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, in November, but Indonesia objected and said it was too early to decide.
The finance heads of the United States, Britain, Canada, Ukraine and the European Central Bank collectively walked out of the G20 meeting of finance ministers in Washington last week when they spoke to the Russian representative to condemn Russia’s aggression once morest Ukraine and the killing of civilians. Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati stressed that all G20 leaders should be invited to the association’s summit, including Putin. The G20 is facing unprecedented challenges, and countries and the UK cooperate to overcome the adverse factors of slowing global growth.
