Nvidia, the world leader in computing and creator of the GPU, is working to advance AI. Using these technologies, NVIDIA hopes to revolutionize the world of video games.

This is the challenge set by NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang. Indeed, he claims that AI will be more intelligent than humans by the end of the decade. It will therefore be able to make video games without any human intervention. It will be able to write scripts, design characters, make music, etc., all by itself.

Before making AI the creator of video games, Nvidia wants to bring non-player characters (NPCs) to life, with its NVIDIA Ace (Avatar Cloud Engine) technology.

Nvidia wants to implement a new AI-based system to make video game scenarios more immersive. Instead of having scripted non-player characters, we’ll have characters who react according to what the player says to them. We’ll have more personal dialogues, making our adventure much more unique.

How does it work?

To enable interaction with the NPC, the player will need a microphone. This will enable them to communicate with the NPC using their voice, like a real conversation. To enable this conversation, the player will need an RTX graphics card. This will translate the player’s voice into object code that can be understood by the computer. The language model will then transform the computer-generated text into audio dialogue. The graphics card will retrieve the audio dialogue and synchronize it with the NPC’s lips.

This technology will be reinforced by the parallel development of Audio2Face technology. This technology will revolutionize character lip-synchronization. This will enable dialogues to be automatically translated into several languages.

Regarding the creation of a video game by AI alone

AI is far from being as creative as humans. In fact, it only imitates, and finds it hard to innovate or surprise. It works according to the input data it is given. As a result, AI games are unlikely to be revolutionary. Instead, we’re likely to see games that strongly resemble popular 21st-century games, with gameplay already developed by these games.

We’ll still need human collaboration to compensate for AI’s lack of creativity. With, on the one hand, developers taking care of the creativity and, on the other, AI systems taking care of the redundant, boring tasks.

Nevertheless, this will have an impact on the dubbing profession. Indeed, the use of AI is likely to replace the latter, especially if the scenario changes according to the player’s interactions. This is likely to complicate dubbing even further, given the number of dialogues that can be captured. AI is therefore likely to replace these dubbers very quickly.

The impact of AI on a video game will be at the whim of the studio or video game industry, which may or may not wish to save money or retain this creative aspect in all artistic fields.
