Aaron Dell has 134 NHL games under his belt. If he impresses at the Spengler Cup with Team Canada, a few more will likely join.

It hasn’t been an easy few months for Aaron Dell. His last NHL contract in San Jose expired last summer and was not renewed. In the fall, Dell tried to force his way into the Columbus Blue Jackets’ training camp for a new working paper – without success. The 34-year-old has not played a single official game this season, neither in the NHL nor elsewhere.
NHL contract with Carolina beckons
Finally, a small door opened for the Canadian. Because the goalie situation at Stanley Cup co-favorite Carolina is currently alarming – regular goalie Frederik Andersen is missing for the long term due to a blood clotting disorder and the nominal number 2 Antti Raanta was banished to the AHL due to repeated poor performances – Dell was appointed to the “Canes”. Trial training invited.
The decision as to whether Dell will get a new chance in the NHL has not yet been made. Carolina wants to wait and see how the Canadian goalie performs at the Spengler Cup. The Hurricanes can afford this additional time because Pyotr Kochetkov, the actual number 3 in the NHL franchise’s goalie hierarchy, has been playing well recently.

Does Dell defy the lack of match practice?
Still, it seems likely that Carolina will need to sign an additional goalie in the foreseeable future. And since the goalie market in the NHL is currently not very promising, the unemployed Dell’s chances are quite good.
The 34-year-old, who has played 134 NHL games for San Jose, New Jersey and Buffalo, can further increase his chances of getting an NHL contract with good performances in Davos. Dell forms Team Canada’s goalie trio at the Spengler Cup together with Thomas Milic and Tyler Beskorowany.
