Attentive observers already found the wording of the penalty imposed on Marc Márquez strange late on Sunday followingnoon. Because the message sent at 5:21 p.m. by the FIM World Motorcycling Association and promoter Dorna expressly states that the Spaniard will receive his double long-lap penalty for the “Gran Premio Michelin de la Republica Argentina MotoGP Race”.
When the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel in Portimao, consisting of Andres Somolinos, Freddie Spencer and Tamara Matko, put it that way, it was already known that Márquez had broken the thumb of his right hand in his collision with Miguel Oliveira. Correctly, it should have read that Marquez gets the penalty for the next Grand Prix he drives.
On Monday morning, Team Repsol Honda officially confirmed that the 30-year-old will not be in action in Argentina next weekend, nor will there be a replacement.
Now the opposing teams are wondering whether Márquez’s penalty will simply be forfeited because the wording explicitly refers to the Argentine GP. If so, they will not accept this formal error without resistance.
