Because of the ongoing wildfires in Canada, authorities have ordered the complete evacuation of the small town of Hay River on Great Slave Lake. The Northwest Territories government has ordered all 4,000 residents to go to the airport and await instructions. The worst forest fires ever recorded are raging in Canada. The government declared a state of emergency last week.
“Anyone staying in Hay River does so at their own risk,” the Northwest Territories government said. Emergency services would then no longer be available.
The declaration of a state of emergency mobilized the military to help fight the fires and get residents to safety. More than 50,000 people, including residents of the Northwest Territories’ capital, Yellowknife, have already been evacuated from the blaze.
