On the fourth day after a major fire, employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations continue to work on the territory of the Wildberries warehouse in Shushary, and security guards are on duty around the ruins. Former employees of the complex come to the fence from time to time. They explained the reason for the visit in a conversation with Fontanka on January 16.

Access to the territory is prohibited; employees of the burnt warehouse are left to look at the remains of the fire from behind the fence. Whole groups of people drive up to the fenced area in cars, some of them wearing the signature purple color from the bus stops. All of them lost their jobs on the same day, and found themselves passing through at the scene of the fire.

“I wanted to go to work that morning, but I couldn’t. Now I’m looking for work, I was passing by, so I stopped by,” said Ilya, who works in a warehouse under a GPC contract. According to him, employees of the burnt warehouse who want to remain in their previous positions at Wildberries have two options left – to get a job at the online retailer’s spare warehouse in Utkina Zavod (Vsevolozhsk district of the Leningrad region) or at the rented Lenta warehouse complex on Moskovskoye Shosse.

“We decide where to go, we ask ourselves,” said a group of young people who also arrived at the scene of the fire after a visit to the Lenta warehouse. In the latter, according to them, it will be possible to start work only in a week. As for the second warehouse, “it seems that most of the workers from the burned premises went there, there are a lot of people, you can’t get in or out.”

As Wildberries responded to Fontanka, the online retailer did not break off relations with permanent employees. Those who decided to earn extra money by registering through the application are really forced to look for a new place on their own. “No one broke off their employment relationship with permanent employees. We reported this earlier,” the company concluded.

The Wildberries warehouse in Shushary caught fire on the morning of January 13. 70 thousand square meters burned. The open burning was extinguished only after 30 hours. A criminal case has been initiated under Part 1 of Article 201 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Abuse of Power”) against unidentified persons. Adventurers are caught among the ruins.

The day after the fire, Wildberries announced that it would open a new sorting center, but experts believe that the company will not be able to find a replacement for half of the capacity lost in the fire in the vicinity of St. Petersburg.
