Wild world record sends fortune to Sisse’s heart project

Sisse Fisker, well-known face from TV and founder of the SMIL Foundation, speaks like a waterfall, but almost lacks words for what the North Jutland ultra runner Stine Rex accomplished in the six days from Monday to Sunday, when she ran around a lake in Aabybro with two purpose:

To break the world record in endurance races for women over six days and at the same time raise a lot of money for the SMIL Foundation.

The SMIL Foundation

  • Former TV presenter Sisse Fisker founded the SMIL Foundation in 2014, after she herself was hospitalized with her two boys, who were operated on as children at the Children’s Surgery Clinic at Rigshospitalet.
  • It was while they were hospitalized that Sisse Fisker got the idea to create a charitable association that can help to sweeten the lives of families struggling with chronic and serious illness.
  • The SMIL Foundation’s first party was held in May 2014, and it was primarily Sisse Fisker and a few volunteers who were responsible for events and activities.
  • Today, the SMIL Foundation consists of a small secretariat with a director, finance manager as well as a number of project managers, fundraisers, children’s art mediators and an HR and administration manager. Every year, the SMIL Foundation holds more than 100 activities and events, both inside and outside the hospitals.
  • Since 2019, the SMILfonden has been subject to the Finance Act.
  • Among the SMIL Foundation’s ambassadors are well-known Danes such as the handball player Casper U. Mortensen, the singer Hjalmer Larsen, TV2 journalist Stine Bjerre Mortensen, the double Olympic gold medalist Viktor Axelsen, the triathlete Camilla Pedersen and the North Jutland winner of Den Store Bagedyst, Liv Martine Hansen.

Both parts succeeded in abundance for the 45-year-old spirrevip with 45 kilos distributed over her 158 centimetres.

With 913.6 kilometres, she beat the previous record by more than 11.8 kilometres. That achievement was also the locomotive in the fundraising for the SMIL Foundation, which has reached DKK 750,000.

– And money is still flowing in, says an impressed Sisse Fisker.

It is 10 years since she founded the SMIL Foundation, after both of her children were admitted to Rigshospitalet. At that time, she set out to create a charitable foundation with the sole purpose of sweetening the lives of families struggling with serious illness in their children.

Sisse Fisker bumped into Stine Rex five years ago, when they were both going to give lectures in North Jutland. Since then, they have followed each other’s lives, and Sisse Fisker also saw the potential when Stine Rex floated the idea of combining an attack on the world record with collecting for the SMIL Foundation a year ago.

It was shortly after she had set a world record over three days in August last year by running 505.6 kilometers around the same lake in Aabybro and at the same time collecting over DKK 400,000 for the organization Shadow Children.

Both then and now, she managed to get a lot of others to run with her along the way.

– The community she creates is actually one of the things that moves me the most. She gives so much of herself and she has inspired so many people to set records big and small. She makes us aware of helping others and shows us all that we are capable of much more than we think. There are so many things about her performance that I am impressed with, says Sisse Fisker.

After a few years as director of the SMIL Foundation, she is today chairman of the board of the foundation, which spreads joy to 30,000 sick children each year with an annual turnover of DKK 15 million.

– It can sometimes take us a week to get DKK 4,000 in private donations. And then Stine Rex earns just DKK 750,000 in one week. It’s crazy and huge, huge for us, states Sisse Fisker.

The large amount of money has come into the coffers in such a way that Stine Rex and 10-12 other ultra runners have each had kilometer sponsors. Others have paid DKK 150 to get a starting number and run together with Stine Rex.

But by far the largest part of the 750,000 kroner has come via MobilePay.

– It is well over half a million from people throughout the country, reveals Sisse Fisker.

During the record week, she herself was present three times in Aabybro. Monday, Friday and at the end on Sunday, when she also ran some laps together with Stine Rex on the 1.4 kilometer long route around the lake in Aabybro.

– I probably ran a half-marathon+, but that pales in comparison, laughs Sisse Fisker.
