Wild Hearts, Caring Hands: Uniting for a Kinder World on World Animal Day

Today, October 4, is World Animal Day. Our local government celebrated this on October 2 with a trip to SOS Wild Animals. A shelter that we work with.

The excursion was completely full. Those who attended received a look behind the scenes of the shelter, a guided tour of the intensive care department, the rehabilitation cages, food rooms, bat houses and an insight into the daily operation of the center.

Animal welfare

In the run-up to World Animal Day, GAIA took stock of the animal welfare policies of the cities and municipalities in Flanders. GAIA makes such an evaluation every six years.

And Denderleeuw‘s results are impressive! Local Government Denderleeuw started 12 years ago with a separate policy on animal welfare, and can today be proud of seventh place in the GAIA ranking of municipalities with the best animal welfare policy.

What exactly is our local government doing to increase animal welfare?

  • In 2018, the policy focus was also placed on Animal Welfare.
  • An alderman for Animal Welfare was appointed.
  • Together with our local police zone, we have an animal welfare expert.
  • During the end of the year and other events we opt for low-noise, and therefore animal-friendly fireworks.
  • Home slaughter is prohibited in Denderleeuw.
  • There are 70 dog poop tubes spread over the 3 sub-municipalities.
  • There are 2 dog parks in Denderleeuw and Welle
  • and a memorial place for deceased animals in the Castle Garden.
  • We work closely with the Ninove Animal Shelter and SOS Wilde Dieren.
  • In addition, we also tackle the problem of stray cats in an adequate manner, where the welfare of the animals always comes first.
