From this Wednesday, in certain areas of Marche-en-Famenne (in the province of Luxembourg), wild boars can be hunted even in the gardens. Indeed, the Luxembourg municipality is worried. Wild boars are too numerous in the region, and they would represent a danger for the population.
On May 27, a herd of wild boars was present at the bottom of a garden. They were on Catherine’s property. Finding it at home is far from a first. This year alone, it has happened seven times.
“When you see only one it’s fine, but there, there were 10 or 15 of them. It’s rather impressive, especially for children”assure Catherine.
An inhabited area poses a problem (see map below). Surrounded by woods, it attracts wild boar, more and more numerous as elsewhere in Wallonia, due in particular to less harsh winters.
Worried regarding the safety of local residents, the municipality mobilized hunters, now authorized to shoot wild boar in private properties.
“In concrete terms, the hunters will not arrive at any time of the day or night at the owner’s. These hunters have signed a charter of good conduct so that things are done with full confidence”, explains Valérie Lescrenier, the alderwoman in charge of the forests of Marche-en-Famenne.
“It’s good news because it’s getting very embarrassing,” says Patricia, a local resident.
The hunters are mandated with a rule to respect. The owner of the land must have given his agreement.
“Knowing that these behemoths are near our homes is not very reassuring. Children are afraid to play outside, so it’s a good thing that happens”confides Virginie, another resident.
A so-called destruction operation, supervised by the Walloon Nature and Forest department. This special hunting permit is provided for a period of one month, but can be extended if necessary.
