Crocodiles and black panthers – these “wild animals” kept Switzerland in suspense
In the summer months there are always sightings of exotic wild animals. In this country, there have already been elephants in Zurich, black panthers in Solothurn and “crocodiles” in Lake Hallwil.

A runaway lioness is being sought in Berlin.
Spectacular wild animal sightings have also taken place in Switzerland.
For example, a female elephant took a bath in Lake Zurich, a caiman is said to have been sighted in Lake Hallwil and a black panther in Solothurn kept the whole of Switzerland in suspense.
In the south of Berlin, a lioness is said to be up to mischief. Early Thursday morning warned the Berlin police and asked residents not to leave their homes. Together with helicopters, the search for the wild animal is now underway.
In Switzerland, too, there have been several sightings of exotic animals in the past.
The “Crocodile” in Lake Hallwil
In the summer of 2019, a fisherman reported that he had seen a caiman in Lake Hallwil, on the shore caught a duck. The police got involved and searched for the animal – they suspected that it was illegal animal husbandry and that the reptile had been abandoned. The search was unsuccessful.
A few days following the spectacular sighting, another fisherman pulled a 105 centimeter long catfish out of the lake – it had a great crested grebe in its stomach. The case thus seems clear to have found a rather unspectacular endingalthough the fisherman who claims to have sighted the caiman was convinced of his observation.
Black panther roams through Solothurn
In 2012, a black cat of prey kept the whole of Switzerland in suspense for weeks. The responsible district forester of the Solothurn Gäu reported that he had seen a black panther during a tour. The entire forest around Kestenholz was searched for the animal – without success.
In Switzerland at that time no black panther missing. It was assumed that the animal had migrated from southern Germany to Switzerland, where a black panther was spotted in autumn 2011. It is still unclear where the panther went and whether it even existed.
Lady elephant escapes and marches through Zurich
In the summer of 2010, the zoo keepers at the Knie circus had a lot to do with Sabu, the lady elephant. He busted twice Elephant out within three days. The first time she enjoyed a leisurely swim in Lake Zurich at Landiwiese, before taking a little tour of downtown Zurich: from Landiwiese, the location of Knie, via Mythenquai and General-Guisan-Quai to Bürkliplatz, then down Bahnhofstrasse to Paradeplatz and continue in the direction of the main train station. Shortly before half past eight Sabu was caught on the valley road.
Three days later same game: This time she went on a tour of Wettingen AG and took a dip in a river until Sabu was persuaded by around 40 people to run back home.
The elephant lady Sabu didn’t want to be denied a swim in Lake Zurich.

This big cat suddenly became a dog
In March 2022, the Vaud canton police warned of a big cat. A photo should the predator near a garden in the municipality of Epalinges VD near Lausanne. The police searched the entire region with game wardens, the canton veterinarian and even with the support of the army – without success.
A day later, the police and the responsible canton doctor announced that they now assumed that the animal was a dog. To this conclusion they came following analyzing the animal’s paw prints. It is still unclear which animal it really was.
Big cat or just a dog? The mystery remains unsolved to this day.

Flamingo blocks the street in Bern
Suddenly, a pink bird appeared in the middle of the street: in summer 2018, a flamingo escaped from Bern Tierpark Dählholzli cleared. The police were able to catch him.
This flamingo treated itself to a trip to downtown Bern.
