Vienna Health Promotion – WiG invited to the lecture “#RiotDontDiet – Resistant health promotion once morest beauty pressure and body shaming” with Dr. Elisabeth Lechner

Vienna (OTS) – As part of the City of Vienna’s Women’s Week, the Viennese Health Promotion – WiG invited people to the event “Health Promotion in Conversation” in Vienna’s Urania on the eve of International Women’s Day and was dedicated to the topic “#RiotDontDiet – Resistant health promotion once morest beauty pressure and body shaming “. Franziska Renner, deputy managing director of Vienna Health Promotion – WiG and host, emphasized in her welcome that “only through a critical examination of the mechanisms within our society can more opportunities for self-determination be achieved for each and every one of us. And that is an absolutely urgent concern, especially in health promotion.”

Resistance as a response to unattainable standards of beauty and body cult

Resistance as a response to the increasingly unattainable standards of beauty and body cult – this is what Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Lechner called for in her lecture with infectious conviction. The topic is as complex as it is exciting at the same time. If you initially think primarily regarding appearances and peer pressure within the younger generation, it quickly becomes clear that this issue affects us all and that there are much larger and complex connections behind it. Because these seemingly superficial youth issues actually involve systemic and quite old paradigms, such as the capitalist and neoliberal market economy, in which selling and profits play a role.

One solution – says Lechner, somewhat surprising the audience – lies in the transformative potential of shame. Because shame is also a tool of power and oppression for the benefit of a few and, above all, for the benefit of the industry, which earns billions from it. However, if we collectively resist, social change would be possible. A call to all of us to move through online and offline realities in a healthy, connected and resistant manner, despite any body shaming.
