At approximately 4:25 am a woman rolled her luggage through one of the busiest intersections in Chicago, United States, the heart of Wicker Park. She was probably headed to the nearby Damen Blue Line station or towards O’Hare, however she did not make it.
A silver vehicle stopped in the left turn lane behind her as she began to cross North Avenue. He was loaded with an armed robbery team, including at least one armed with a rifle.
The victim crossed the street as the car moved toward her. She continued moving when a rifleman in the back seat opened the door, preparing to cut her off. The subject jumped out, pointing the end of the gun at her head, while her accomplices got out of the car to shake her.
The gunman watched the six-way intersection, looking for witnesses and police while his companions took away everything interesting from the woman. When a pickup truck stopped at a red light on North Avenue, the man pointed his gun at the driver and motioned for him to cross the intersection. Wisely, the motorist obeyed him.
A city surveillance camera recorded everything that happened on September 23. The Chicago Office of Communications and Emergency Management refused to turn over the images when they were requested a few hours later through a Freedom of Information Act request.
This Friday, thanks to some pressure from the Illinois attorney general’s office, the city changed its tune.
After driving away, the crew stopped regarding a block down, hitting the victim in the head with the butt of a rifle.
Police surveillance officers who reviewed the video reported descriptions of the men and their vehicle over the radio to patrol units. Detailing that the car’s left headlight was off, the right rear window was broken, probably because the car was stolen and the thieves had to break the glass to get in.
A few minutes later, the robbery team displayed at least one rifle to rob another woman in the 900 block of West Randolph in the West Loop. The robbers hit her in the face. They ran into another woman around the same time, near Lake and Elizabeth streets.
A Chicago police sergeant spotted the robbers’ getaway vehicle as they drove through the West Loop. He mentioned it on the radio but did not insist.
