Why your car insurance is increasing again this year

An almost unavoidable expense for most workers, car insurance weighs heavily on household budgets. Because despite calls for greener alternative mobility, the individual car most often remains the norm in everyday life. In fact, the State counted nearly 38.9 million cars in circulation in France at the start of 2023.
However, the cost of claims and repairs impacts contributions which increased by 3.3% over the whole of last year, according to the annual barometer published at the end of January by the comparator Assurland.com. According to this study, a car insurance contract now costs on average €651 per year (compared to €630 previously). But this figure masks significant disparities depending on the territory, with Île-de-France unsurprisingly displaying the most expensive contracts (€771 per year). Conversely, it is in Brittany (€503 per year) and in the Pays de la Loire (€540) that we pay the least. As for young drivers, they still pay a high price for their coverage with an average of almost €1,400 per year. And, bad news, Assurland.com forecasts a general increase of 3.5% in the cost of car insurance in 2024…

Expensive all-risk coverage

In an inflationary context, the time is obviously more than ever to look for the best offer. Young people are also those who compare their car insurance the most, according to a study by the site LesFurets.com also published at the end of January. 26-35 year olds represent 29% of quote requests on this online comparator in 2023, followed closely by 18-25 year olds for 27% of requests, compared to only 20% for 36-45 year olds.
In terms of coverage, it is still the all-risk formula that remains the most popular with 57% of votes in the Assurland.com study and 50% of quotes on LesFurets.com. On the other hand, the estimated prices differ between these surveys since they do not use the same databases. Comprehensive insurance costs on average €677 per year nationally according to Assurland.com, compared to €1,011 on average across quotes from Furets.com, up 5% compared to 2022. However, the figures converge for third-party insurance, which corresponds to compulsory civil liability alone, estimated at €607 for the first and €639 for the second. Finally, intermediate packages including civil liability and theft and fire guarantee reach on average €635 according to the first study and €908 according to the second.
