Taking a shower rids your body of germs and bacteria, but you can compromise your hygiene and the health of your skin by using a rough loofah.

In fact, most dermatologists do not recommend it, and certainly do not use it, according to the human health website “thehealthy”.

“You should avoid rubbing your body with a loofah because it is very irritating and damaging to the skin,” says Benjamin Garden, MD, a dermatologist in Chicago. Instead, use your fingers to gently rub the lotion all over your body.

Over-washing depletes the skin’s natural lipids that are an important part of its protective barrier, which is why Peter O’Neill, MD, chief of dermatology at NYU Hospital, suggests using gentle cleansers, and avoiding scrubbing, because loofahs and bacteria go hand in hand on a germ note.

American Dr. Joel Schlesinger, a dermatologist, also does not recommend using loofahs while bathing, explaining that relying on loofah sponges with many unclean areas of the body allows bacteria to multiply inside the nooks and crannies of the sponge.

He added: Organisms colonize in these spaces, especially in the warm and humid bathing environment, and this creates the possibility of serious infection, especially in patients with weakened immune systems.

He concluded that the bacteria on the loofah is not a new discovery, as it was revealed by research published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology dating back to 1994.
