Why Xbox Is Here to Stay: Future of Gaming Consoles and Microsoft’s Dominance in the Industry

2024-01-10 13:28:35

There’s been a lot of chatter on social media and community circles lately that the Xbox is at a disadvantage and that Microsoft’s gaming division may eventually give up on making a video game console entirely and instead focus its efforts on third-party game distribution and streaming. If you’re an Xbox pureblood and this topic has worried you lately, let me tell you right now, you really, really shouldn’t be worried. The reasons are as follows

Xbox is owned by Microsoft

I know this seems obvious, but it’s true. Microsoft is one of the biggest companies in the world, and used to be the biggest, which means that unlike its biggest competitors in gaming, Sony and Nintendo, it has a ridiculous, unimaginable amount of cash. This means that, despite how bad things have been with Xbox lately, as long as it as an industry is still generating revenue for Microsoft (which it is, and there’s usually a lot of money), the big guys will continue to support and support Xbox.

Gaming consoles are at a turning point

One of the biggest concerns seems to be the possible imminent launch of the Xbox console. First, they’re not coming anytime soon because Xbox makes too much cash from the Xbox Game Pass market to let that happen.
Second, consoles as a whole, as we know them, are likely to look a lot different in the next five to ten years than they do now. Why? As technology evolves and changes, we’ve also seen how the console space adapts to this. Entertainment is bigger than ever, cloud streaming is continuing to grow and expand, and soon this may become the primary way to play games. i.e. without a defined console, stream your games on your TV via the internet.
Essentially, if Xbox decided to put a bullet in the head of its console gaming universe, you might expect Sony to do something similar not long following, and probably at some point following that ( Although Nintendo is a bit of a rogue operator, so anything can happen with the company).&

Streaming and subscriptions are the future, and Xbox already has their metaphorical ball

Cloud streaming and gaming subscription services are the future of the industry. Or, at least in the next 10 years or so. Xbox has invested a lot of money and resources into these areas upfront, and it shows. Game Pass was a huge success and seemed to generate huge amounts of money. xCloud is constantly improving and becoming more available every day.
Sony and Nintendo may have given the Xbox a hard time in terms of console thinking, and indeed, other console makers strangled and buried the Xbox alive a few years ago, but the Xbox has more than a barrel in both streaming and subscription services, of course This is partly due to the fact that it has to shore up its finances by bringing major games to the service.

Activision Blizzard. Enough said.

You don’t spend $68 billion, spend countless days and resources hiring lawyers to fight in court, all on the world’s largest third-party game publisher, and then retreat from the gaming spotlight.
This acquisition is a huge, bloated, and astonishing letter of intent from Microsoft to the industry. It’s not going away anytime soon, in fact, if you ask me, Microsoft is gearing up for a massive renaissance and return to form following regarding a decade of struggling and losing ground to the competition. As I noted above, this may not translate into console sales, but when we see this massive company properly fold into the tech giant, every other segment in Microsoft’s gaming revenue stream will undoubtedly start to thrive .

There are many other reasons as to why Xbox is and will be great now. Xbox Game Studios, for example, is huge, and there’s no way Xbox is limiting that potential by giving up on being a first-party publisher. Microsoft is actually a major shareholder in this industry, and as gaming continues to boom, the massive company will continue to leverage it for revenue. Sure, things will likely continue to be stable in terms of first-party production over the next few years, but once the pipeline becomes more stable, Microsoft and Xbox will be giants and absolutely behemoths to compete with. The future might be very green.
