For some, the term “WiFi” is an acronym for “Wireless Fidelity”, but it is not. This even if the company that owns the label played on the confusion that existed.

The gender of the word “WiFi” has often raised debates between those who say “the” WiFi” and those who say “the” WiFi. However, the meaning of the term raises fewer questions as the term has become an integral part of everyday life.

It has regularly been said that the term WiFi is an acronym for “Wireless Fidelity”, which might be translated as “wireless fidelity”. In reality, this is not the case, the word WiFi is nothing more than a label, a registered trademark name that means nothing.

Originally, the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (now known as the Wi-Fi Alliance) aimed to sell products that complied with the IEEE 802.11 standards. Suffice to say that the name of these standards was not really attractive and might be scary by its technical aspect. Therefore, the company turned to Interbrand, a communications company, to help recognize products that meet IEEE 802.11 standards. Interbrand thus invented the “WiFi” label and the logo in the form of Yin and Yang.

Moreover, the complete lack of meaning of the term disturbed many people at the time, which led the Wi-Fi Alliance to believe that “WiFi” was the acronym for “Wireless Fidelity” when some of their communication campaigns.

Phil Belanger, one of the founding members of the WiFi Alliance, explain Thus : ” “Wireless Fidelity”, what does it mean? Nothing “. Before adding: we were smart to call on Interbrand to come up with the name and logo. We were stupid to sabotage their work by adding the meaningless slogan. Please help reinforce the good work we have done and forget the tagline ».

In summary, the term “WiFi” does not mean anything and represents only a label, a registered trademark name. It might only be that the communication company Interbrand played on the resemblance with the term Hi-fi, which is indeed the acronym of “high fidelity”.
