Sri Lanka’s young fast bowler Sheehan Madhushanaka has been suspended from all forms of cricket for allegedly possessing heroin.
According to a Cricinfo report, the young bowler was arrested three days ago by the Sri Lanka Cricket Board for possessing heroin and was in police custody.
The police said that heroin was allegedly present in Sheehan Madushnaka’s car and was recovered by the police on May 24.
They said more than 2 kg of drugs were recovered from the cricketer and he was detained by Penala police in the northeastern city of Negombo.
Police said the fast bowler was produced before a magistrate after his arrest, but will be remanded till his appearance in the High Court.
A Sri Lanka Cricket Board statement said Sheehan will remain suspended until the board conducts a full inquiry into the matter.
The 25-year-old fast bowler Sheehan, who made his debut against Bangladesh on January 27, 2018, has so far represented Sri Lanka in one ODI and two T20Is.
Sheehan was sidelined from the Sri Lankan team for a year and a half due to injury, but he was busy in Sri Lanka’s domestic season before sports activities were suspended due to Covid-19.
Given Sri Lanka’s laws, Sheehan could face severe punishment if found guilty, while the young fast bowler has not been convicted of such a serious breach of the code of conduct before.
Sheehan was excellent in his first match against Bangladesh, taking 3 wickets for 26 runs and the Sri Lankan team defended 221 runs to defeat Bangladesh by 79 runs.
He has taken only two wickets in two T20 matches.
According to the report, Sheehan Madushnaka was unlikely to be included in the national team’s training starting in June.
