The neighbors who witnessed the murder perpetrated in the Brasilia neighborhood of commune 4 (Aranjuez), last Tuesday, did not imagine that The victim of the hitman was one of the most powerful bosses in the center of Medellín.

This is about Omar Darío Daza Monsalve, who was known as the ‘Czar’ of drugs in the ‘Bronx’ of Medellín and who, according to Mayor Federico Gutiérrez, managed all the vice houses located between Greiff Avenue and 52nd and 57th Streets, adjacent to Plaza de Botero.

“He was a person with a high criminal record. He was the one who managed the houses of vice behind the entire area of Greiff Avenue,” said Gutiérrez.

Don Omar, as he was known, was captured on August 29, 2018, and served a sentence of about six years for conspiracy to commit crimes, among other crimes.

Upon regaining his freedom, less than six months ago, he attempted to position himself as the biggest drug lord in the city center.

According to authorities, Don Omar acquired more properties in the so-called Bronx of Medellín and put them to work as large vice houses.and these businesses could make around 1.5 billion pesos a month.

The murder

Don Omar, 49, was in his luxurious gray Toyota Hilux pickup truck —on Carrera 50 and Calle 79 in the Brasilia neighborhood— when He was attacked by hitmen who were traveling on motorcycles. At that time he was with his wife who, miraculously, escaped unharmed from the attack.

A video circulating on social media shows how, after the attack, some people get him out of the vehicle and put him in a taxi, where his wife also gets in, to be taken to the San Vicente Fundación Hospital where he arrived without vital signs.

The motives for the murder are still unknown.but according to Mayor Gutiérrez it could be a settling of scores between criminal leaders.

It is well known that Don Omar was the leader of the ‘Convivir del Bronx’ attached to the criminal gang ‘La Terraza’ where, for years, its leaders have been killing each other to have total power over the structure. The last of them, in fact, was Julián Alexander Suárez Giraldo (alias ‘el Enano’), who was murdered on March 7.

And it is that at this moment ‘La Terraza’ is divided into two factions that fight over strategic areas for their illegal businesses. Some combos and ‘convivir’ are loyal to alias ‘Cabe’, one of the most wanted men by the Police in Medellin, while others are under the orders of aliases ‘Chicho’ and ‘Chuki’, the latter were those who inherited the power that alias ‘Douglas’ had in that criminal gang.

“The first hypotheses are revenge and settling of scores between criminal structures and this person had a long criminal record,” added Mayor Gutierrez.
