In 1966, the famous Yak-40 aircraft was produced in the USSR. It was developed at the Yakovlev Design Bureau by decree of the Council of Ministers of the USSR – the design bureau was tasked with creating a replacement for the obsolete Il-12 and Il-14.
The well-known design bureau coped with this task brilliantly. The Yak-40 became the world’s first three-engine turbojet passenger aircraft of the 3rd class. It was capable of carrying up to 24 to 32 passengers, landing on the busiest runway, taking off literally from a spot or on two engines, so it became an indispensable vessel for local airlines – the plane made it possible to fly to even the smallest town and visit relatives. That’s why they loved him.
The Yak-40 instantly became popular in the USSR and might even gain international fame. Orders for the plane were made from Germany, Italy and even the USA. However, the aircraft was prevented from spreading massively throughout the world by lengthy certification and production features – representatives of other countries were not allowed into the factories that produced the Yaki.
However, the famous aircraft also had one serious drawback. Because of him, he even received a mocking nickname among the people and among pilots.
The central engine of the aircraft had an S-shaped air intake and was characterized by increased smoke during takeoff. At the same time, the Yak-40 consumed a relatively large amount of kerosene. Because of these factors, he was nicknamed “Cigarette Butt”. Also, sometimes the plane was jokingly called the “Kerosene Eater.”
Despite this, the aircraft was very popular in the USSR until the 1980s. In 1981, the Yakovlev Design Bureau ceased production of the Yak-40 and focused on the production of the Yak-42.
However, in Russia these legendary aircraft are still in use today. As of 2019, several aircraft of this model were used by the Vologda and Kamchatka airlines and even the FSB border service.
