The adventure film “Morozko”, shot by Alexander Rou, is rightfully considered a masterpiece of Soviet cinema. The director and actors managed to transfer the Russian folk tale to the screens so well that the picture was enthusiastically received not only at home, but also abroad – even despite the Iron Curtain.
In the Czech Republic, for example, “Morozko” has become an integral part of the New Year: on the eve of the holiday, the film is regularly broadcast on TV. And the Czech ambassador Jaroslav Bashta even presented Inna Churikova with the Masaryk silver medal for the role of Marfushi.
Overseas, the picture was appreciated by professionals. The US Film Advisory Board awarded “Morozko” with the Award of Excellence for the best screenplay for family viewing, and the legendary Steven Spielberg even claimed that the Soviet film was the forerunner of many Hollywood film masterpieces.
Nevertheless, an ordinary viewer from the States did not share the enthusiasm of the experts. In the famous IMDb rating, the film scored a modest 6.3 points (In the Russian Kinopoisk – 8.1), and Americans still write angry reviews regarding the film, call it the worst fantasy and include it in all kinds of anti-ratings of the worst films.
Below are the highlights.
“Watching this movie will result in a loss of sanity and motor skills. The film has magic mushrooms, walking houses, walking trees, a bear, a roving gang of dwarf assassins, and so on. And then there’s Jack Frost (Santa Claus), who freezes everything on a whim.”
Why do I hate this movie so much?! Because he teaches his target audience – children – that “attractive people are good, and unattractive people are incredibly evil, bad.” The content of the movie is terrible. This movie is just a disgrace. Moreover, it is filmed in beautiful and memorable landscapes. But the content of the film is terrible!”
“The biggest fear of Americans is that following the collapse of the USSR, the filmmakers will flee to neighboring countries and start making films for terrorists. This movie is BAD. EXTREMELY BAD. Imagine the Teletubbies under acid and with lots of snow. It’s close to Jack Frost. Trust me, this movie hurts people. Stay away!”
“After I saw Jack Frost, I had nightmares. Okay: maybe not, but it’s a terrible movie. It makes absolutely no sense! I don’t understand why it was removed at all, except that someone in Russia liked it then (but I doubt that either). In other words, don’t watch this movie.”
But why is Morozko so disliked in the USA? Firstly, because of the huge difference in culture and mentality. For the mass audience, the plot, characters, scenery and atmosphere of the picture seemed ridiculous and even scary.
And secondly, the reason for the hatred lies in the very presentation of the film. Most Americans saw Morozko at the Mystery Theater of 3000. This is a popular comedy show that takes place in the distant future. According to the plot, evil scientists torture people by forcing them to watch bad films of the past. In one series, one film is dismantled, shortened to fit the format of the program and diluted with ironic comments.
In the show “Morozko” was presented as a crazy creation of “crazy” Soviet directors during the Cold War. Many viewers did not understand the irony and accepted what was shown as the truth. So there were wild reviews.
However, now the situation on IMDb is gradually improving. Fans of “Frost” give the film the highest possible scores and in their reviews they try to explain to the haters why Rowe’s film was actually a masterpiece of its time.
