“Why the Extension of Municipal and Elective Councils Violates the Principle of Separation of Powers: A Look at the Government’s Intention to Postpone Elections”

NNA – Representative Osama Saad considered, in an intervention in the Parliament session, that “the extension of municipal and elective councils violates the principle of separation of powers,” pointing out that “the government’s deliberate intention was to postpone the elections despite its pledge to the contrary.” He asked: Why do we violate the principle of separation of powers? In its ministerial statement, the government pledged to hold the municipal and elective elections on time, and it won the parliament’s confidence on this basis, and it also set the dates for holding them. But its deliberate intention is to postpone it, which means that the government lied to the Lebanese and misled public opinion, and it is now taking refuge in the Parliament… It is not the job of the Parliament to cover up the government’s violations and violations, but rather its duty to hold it accountable! Why did the government not provide the necessary funds, staff, and logistical preparations to conduct the municipal and elective elections on time? Therefore, the Parliament’s approval of postponing the date of holding the municipal and elective elections secures cover for the government and relieves it of its responsibilities, and it is certain that the government was happy with that… My suggestion is that the Parliament not decide on the two proposals, and that it stick to holding the elections on time. And if the government does not want to hold them for any reason, then it must assume its responsibility by submitting a bill to the House of Representatives calling for postponing the municipal elections, justifying the reasons for its inability to hold them on time. This is a constitutional obligation, and let him bear all his responsibility before the Lebanese people.
