Why Talking to the Dead with AI is Not a Good Idea: Insights from a Psychologist

New tools to simulate a conversation with deceased people using artificial intelligence would be harmful for mourning a loved one.

This is at least the opinion that the psychologist Paul Langevin shared in an interview with TVA Nouvelles.

“I asked myself a lot of questions and contacted a few colleagues. We all agree that for mourning, it’s really not a good idea, ”says Mr. Langevin.

Software like Forever Voices currently allows users to simulate conversations with deceased people like Steve Jobs, for example.

The prospect of downloading the voice of a loved one who has lost his life gives the psychologist headaches.

“In a grieving process, there are letting go that we have to do,” he explains. And where we wonder is if you’re still in touch and you think that’s the reality, that you’re talking to someone because you’re in pain and you’re vulnerable, that’s sure that there will be difficulties, because the person will have difficulty moving on to the next stage and even resuming their life.”

This is already a phenomenon that psychologists observe when a person repeatedly watches the video of the deceased person.

“We have to tell them to put it aside or ask a loved one to pick up the DVD or the USB key so that they keep it until they are better able to listen to them”, he continues.

While it’s okay to talk to a deceased person, it’s the response the AI allows that would be problematic.

“In a grieving process, it’s healthy to talk to people who have died, but they don’t respond, so it’s self-communication,” says the psychologist. We are talking regarding other things here. The person responds, and with what they respond, we can do anything with it.”

Malicious people make the psychologist fear the worst.

“We are weak […] so what scares me are the ill-intentioned people who would make anyone say anything in artificial intelligence, that’s what is dangerous.

Other uses of artificial intelligence including the simulation of a romantic relationship are also to be feared, according to Mr. Langevin.

“If we are not able to live our life naturally, and we have to fall in love with a robot, and there at the limit, they will put the effigy of the former spouse on the robot, so there it will prevent them from moving forward,” he shares.
