Starfield is coming to Xbox Series X/S (with 30fps cap) and Windows PC, but not PS5, PS4 and Xbox One!

facts

Since the announcement of Starfield Many fans of the PlayStation and Xbox One platforms have been excitedly awaiting the game, only to be disappointed to learn that it is be exclusive to Windows PC and Xbox Series X/S becomes. This decision by Bethesda and Microsoft has led to a lot of speculation and discussion. In this article we want to take a look at why Starfield not for the PlayStation 5 (PS5), PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Xbox One will appear.

Why Starfield isn’t coming to PS5, PS4 or Xbox One

There are a few reasons for this, which I will list one by one:

Microsoft acquired Bethesda

In 2021, Bethesda, Starfield’s developer studio, was acquired by Microsoft. This acquisition brought major changes, including the decision to make future Bethesda titles exclusive to Xbox platforms. Microsoft wants to use it to strengthen its own gaming brand and exclusive content for the Xbox Series X/S offer. As a result of this acquisition, Starfield will not be released for PlayStation consoles and Xbox One.

As a “downer” one may note at this point: Starfield will already be included in the PC/Xbox Game Pass on the release day. PC players can also play the role-playing game from Bethesda in Game Pass for Windows computers at no additional cost. But more on that later.

Focus on the ninth generation of consoles

Starfield promises a groundbreaking and immersive gaming experience in an open science fiction world. To achieve this vision, the development team is focusing on the performance of the current next-gen hardware, specifically the Xbox Series X/S and PC. These platforms provide advanced technologies and resources to meet Starfield’s graphical and technical needs.

A release for older generations of consoles would potentially mean compromising quality and gaming experience, which the developers want to avoid. After all, Starfield “only” achieves 30 FPS on the powerful Xbox Series X/S console at the time of release. An Xbox One version would probably have caused a number of limitations in terms of quality and visuals of the game. We only remember the PS4 release of Cyberpunk 2077 from CD Projekt Red. Bethesda might not have met the expectations of the players on the Xbox One either.

Integration in den PC/Xbox Game Pass

The PC/Xbox Game Pass is a subscription service from Microsoft that provides access to an extensive library of games. With the acquisition of Bethesda, their games were also included in Xbox Game Pass. Starfield will be part of this games library and will be available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers. This is a strategic move by Microsoft to increase subscription value and make Xbox platforms more attractive. Starfield’s Xbox exclusivity increases the incentive for players to choose Xbox Game Pass. PlayStation takes a completely different approach here. AAA first-party games will not be released for PlayStation Plus on release day, as has been discussed recently.

While the decision not to release Starfield for PlayStation and Xbox One has certainly disappointed some fans, there are positives as well. The focus on the next-gen hardware allows the developers to deliver the best possible gaming experience without technical limitations. Additionally, Xbox players can enjoy the game through PC/Xbox Game Pass, which offers an affordable way to experience a wide range of games.

High development costs would have justified the Starfield release for PS5

I’ve had all video game consoles at home for decades. But not everyone has this “luck”. A new console costs more than 500 euros, because you also need a decent 4K television and possibly an HDMI 2.1 cable that is “good”. A topic that would have justified a Starfield release for the Sony PlayStation 5: the high development costs of current AAA video games. While there are no explicit numbers for Starfield, such mighty big games can often cost millions (or even $100 million) before release.

I don’t want to belittle Xbox as a platform with their estimated 21.8 million Xbox Series X/S consoles sold, but unless the PC gamer front opens up to flock to the Bethesda title, then this title would be deep red. They haven’t abolished money for Microsoft either. Maybe I’m wrong and there’s an Xbox Series or Xbox Game Pass boom because of Starfield. Even Xbox boss Phil Spencer Realistically, no one is selling their Switch or PS5 because of Starfield.

Starfield will be released on September 6th, 2023 for Windows PC and console exclusive for Xbox Series X/S.
