In the sphere of agriculture, we speak of “crop rotation” when we refer to crops spread out on the same plot year following year. What is it exactly? So, to help you understand this principle better: if, for example, you plant tomatoes or onions in the same place in the vegetable garden for two consecutive years, without ensuring that you establish an adequate crop rotation, this can cause various problems. Strange, you say? In fact, it should be understood that each plant has different nutrient needs. However, repeated cultivation can end up exhausting the soil.

Take the case of tomatoes for example: as you know, they are very nutritious and require a large amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to flourish. For their part, onions do not have the same needs. Therefore, if they are grown in the same place year following year, the soil will inevitably lack nutrients and they will no longer grow properly. And it doesn’t stop there: if you grow them in the same space for several years in a row, this is the best way to attract insect pests to the soil. This is simply because these pathogens are so used to it that they keep coming back to it. By planting the same vegetable in the ground, you provide a continual food source for these undesirables. To have a successful harvest, and above all to avoid damaging your fruits or vegetables, you absolutely must find out regarding the most appropriate crop combinations. Here, precisely, the best way to make your tomato plants prosper is to surround them with a healthy neighborhood: to boost their growth, bet on carrots, lettuce, cucumber, garlic, cabbage, basil, chives, asparagus or even spinach. Yes, oddly, cooked together, it gives a delicious dish. And, nothing like marrying tomato with corn to decorate a good fresh salad! Yet these two should not be grown together. Surprise: unlike other aromatic herbs, such as chives or basil, dill is not tender with tomatoes. You have to believe that she is the exception. Moreover, there is a small nuance to underline. Because young dill is not harmful since it even helps repel aphids, these tiny harmful insects that affect many plants. But once it matures and is even ready to sow, dill will tend to stunt the growth of tomato plants. No luck !
Since they are part of the nightshade family, tomatoes and potatoes require the same nutrients to grow. So there is bound to be some kind of competition that benefits neither one nor the other, which can make them vulnerable to the same diseases. These can then spread through the soil, ruining both plants as soon as one begins to be affected. It is an ugly vicious circle to be absolutely avoided! It should also be noted that this proximity risks damaging the roots of the tomatoes during the harvest.
What might be more succulent than a tomato and eggplant gratin baked in the oven? Italians know this: the fusion of these two foods is commonplace in their cuisine. But, in the garden, it’s a whole different story. The separation is in order since, as for the potato, the eggplant is part of the nightshade family, so it is a direct competitor to the tomato. Knowing that the eggplant is very susceptible to blight, this effect may be contagious and make the tomato vulnerable in turn to this fungal disease which spreads very quickly. How to detect a sign of burns? Just watch your tomatoes: if you notice them suddenly starting to turn brown, yellow, or develop suspicious spots, then the leaves are dying.

Take care of your onions! Although they are generally known to be friendly with all plants in the garden, there are still some exceptions.

Keep them away from the following plants:
- Beans (green and bush), peas and other legumes : onions risk killing certain bacteria that are very beneficial to the roots of these plants, which can greatly slow down their growth. But, since these legumes fix nitrogen in the soil and the onions are very fond of them, it is better to plant them just following the peas and beans are harvested.
- asparagus : between onions and asparagus, nothing goes! They will continually fight to feed on the same nutrients. Therefore, if you stubbornly keep them aside, you will stunt the growth of one or both crops.
- Sage : this aromatic plant brings so much nitrogen to the soil that it can negatively impact the onion bulb. If you want healthy growth, it’s best not to plant them together.
- Other plants in the onion family (garlic, leek, shallot, chives, spring onion): you would think it would be good to grow them happily in the same plot (at least, that would have made our task easier!), but it turns out that it is not not a good idea. Because, all these derivatives attract many pests which are likely to go frolicking on the side of your onions. Better to space them out to avoid trouble.
