“Why Red Bull’s Double Win in Azerbaijan Grand Prix Didn’t Sit Well with Verstappen: Analysis and Reactions”

These words should not go down well with the Red Bull bosses.

The Austrian team actually only has reason to be happy following the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. At the fourth Formula 1 race of the season, RB celebrated the third double win of the season. The Brause racing team is already 93 (!) points ahead of the second-placed Aston Martin in the constructors’ classification. And the two RB pilots are also at the top of the drivers’ championship.

And yet it worked Max Verstappen (25) not entirely happy following the race in Baku. The reason: The world champion only came second behind his teammate Sergio Perez (31) finished – although he was leading the Grand Prix at times and had a good chance of winning. Verstappen at the press conference: “I might only see it when driving past, but the team might have seen what the situation was like on the screens.”

What the Dutchman means: On lap eleven, compatriot Nyck de Vries (28) misjudged turn four and touched the inner track boundary with his Alpha Tauri. The wheel suspension breaks, de Vries comes to a standstill with his car in turn five. Verstappen: “I thought he only had one mistake, but that wasn’t the case.”

The Red Bull command post has around a minute to decide whether to bring in Verstappen, who is leading the race at the time, for the pit stop. The team decides to do so – although it is obvious from the TV camera views that there is a high probability that the safety car will be deployed.

Verstappen boxes, Perez takes the lead. Just one lap later, the safety car is sent onto the track, giving Perez a “free” tire change. Because while the racing cars under the yellow flag are allowed to go full throttle outside the danger area, they have to slow down considerably everywhere on the route in the case of the safety car. As a result, the drivers who change tires during the safety car lose significantly less time.

Verstappen’s anger shouldn’t last too long. When asked regarding his team criticism, the Dutchman put his statement into perspective: “Something like this happens.” The world champion knows that Red Bull didn’t knowingly want to harm him, the superstar of the racing team. Especially since Verstappen still leads the World Cup by six points and is well on the way to defending his title for the second time in a row.
