The endocrinologist explained why people with type 1 diabetes smell of acetone.
Strange smell
Endocrinologist Maria Khudyakova said that type 1 diabetes can be diagnosed in people in childhood or youth, since the disease occurs due to autoimmune disorders.
Khudyakova named the smell of acetone from a person as one of the symptoms of type 1 diabetes. This happens when there is not enough glucose, it is not able to penetrate into the cell, the body uses fats. As a result, their breakdown products, in particular acetone, begin to enter the blood. And since it is excreted from the body by the kidneys and lungs, the human body begins to smell like acetone.
The doctor also named other symptoms of the development of type 1 diabetes: sudden weight loss, weakness, dry mouth, decreased visual acuity.
Diagnosable
Khudyakova warned that type 2 diabetes is more common in people in middle and older age. A person is at risk of getting this disease due to an unhealthy lifestyle: lack of exercise, excess weight, addiction to junk food and drinks, unhealthy habits.
If you notice that you are often tormented by thirst, severe dry mouth, frequent urination, pins and needles in your arms and legs, itching and burning of mucous membranes, decreased vision, your doctor advises you to immediately consult a specialist.
The earlier diabetes is diagnosed, the easier it is to prescribe treatment; a disease under control does not threaten a person with developing life-threatening complications. Diabetes is one of those diseases that goes silent for a long time. And only measuring the sugar level gives an idea of the disease.
