Have you ever wondered what causes gray hair? But don’t worry anymore, American scientists have found the answer. According to reports, American scientists have discovered that the stem cells stop working with age and are the cause of hair graying. This is the report of the research team from New York University (NYU)-Lagon conducted on rats. As people age, stem cells lose their ability to maintain hair color.

The study, published in the journal Nature, focused on cells called melanocyte stem cells, or McSC, in humans. Loss of function of melanocyte stem cells causes hair graying and loss of color. These findings suggest that melanocyte stem cell motility and reversible differentiation are important for maintaining hair health and color, says Mayumi Ito, a professor at NYU Langone Health.

As the cells age, they become unable to regenerate or mature into pigment-producing melanocytes. The researchers found that this causes the McSCs to cease their regenerative behavior.

Ito added that further studies are planned to find ways to restore the motility of McSCs or help them produce pigment.
