Do you understand the term intellectual property? This is the question that the European Union Intellectual Property Office asked nearly 26,000 citizens of EU member countries, including Luxembourg. 87% of Luxembourg residents understand the term “well or very well”.

A figure slightly above the EU average of 83%. This is the result of a study on the perception, awareness and behavior of citizens which highlights some data on the country, in particular on its relationship to counterfeiting and online piracy.

While more than 80% of residents believe that buying counterfeit products promotes unethical behavior, supports criminal organizations and penalizes jobs, 19% admit to intentionally buying counterfeit goods in the last twelve months (13% for EU average).

85% prefer the legal option

In addition, 36% of those surveyed say they do not buy counterfeit products because of safety or health risks, while 34% do not buy counterfeits so as not to harm the manufacturers of original products.

Piracy of online content is also studied in this survey, which reveals that 21% of Luxembourg residents questioned have accessed, read or downloaded content from illegal sources in the last twelve months (14% on average in the EU).

However, 50% of residents surveyed refuse to access illegally downloaded content because of the harm caused to artists or creators and 85% say they prefer the legal option when it is affordable.
