PRESIDENT Joe Biden has revealed the reasons for his poor performance in last week’s US presidential debate. Biden said he was jet lagged after making a state visit before the debate.

“I didn’t listen to my staff, and then I almost fell asleep on stage,” Biden was quoted as saying. BBC.

The 81-year-old president last returned from a state trip on June 15, nearly two weeks before the June 27 debate.

Biden’s remarks come amid internal Democratic panic ahead of the November US election. A Texas congressman and Democratic lawmaker, Rep. Lloyd Doggett, has called on Biden to drop out of the race after his poor debate performance against rival Donald Trump.

“I hope he will make the difficult and painful decision to resign,” Rep. Lloyd Doggett said in a statement Tuesday (July 2).

President Biden appeared to struggle with some responses during his debate with former President Donald Trump.

Biden made two separate trips to Europe in the space of two weeks last month.

On June 15, he appeared at a fundraiser with former President Barack Obama after a trip from Italy. He returned to Washington DC the next day.

White House officials previously said Biden was battling the flu on the day of the debate.

A CBS News/YouGov poll released Sunday indicated 72% of registered voters believe the president lacks sufficient mental and cognitive health to serve as president — a sharp increase from the 65% who said the same in the previous survey. Forty-nine percent of voters said the same about former President Donald Trump.

Of particular concern for Biden is that 45% of registered Democratic voters believe a Biden presidency should make way for another candidate. Concerns about the candidates’ ages – Biden is 81 and Trump is 78 – had already surfaced and were discussed before the debate. (BBC/P-5)
