Why it is STRONGLY not recommended to charge your smartphone at night

Most French people have this bad habit: charge your smartphone all night. Or leave it plugged in for hours after the battery reaches 100%. If you are in this category of person, it is important for you to change this habit. The general director of the BatterieIngenieure company, Dominik Schulte, recommends it in an article published on the English-speaking news site Business Insider. This expert explains how to optimize the life of a phone’s batteries. And this is because he realized that leaving it plugged in all night impacts its lifespan. “If you charge your phone to 100% and keep it at 100%, leaving it to charge overnight… This will have a negative effect on its aging because of its lithium-ion batteries »did he declare.

Optimize the battery life of your smartphone

Dominik Schulte then emphasizes that smartphones take longer when charged between 30% and 50%. The expert also recommends charging your phone in the morning. According to his explanations, when a smartphone battery ages, the chemical composition inside changes. It then becomes “less efficient” to store and power the device. The latter recommends always maintain the charge between 30% and 80%. Also, do not wait until the battery is exhausted or charge it to its maximum capacity. This tip would boost battery life. Some smartphones, including Samsung Galaxy, even have an option to limit the maximum charge to 85%. And thus, minimize the risks. However, it is important to check that these optimizations are already activated (this does not necessarily happen by default on all models).

Optimized battery charging on iPhone

If you’re using iPhone running iOS 13 or later, the feature Optimized charging with the similar effect is active by default. So, on all recent iPhones, you can be sure to maintain a charge between 20% and 80%. This, without the slightest modification of the parameters. About this function, Apple specifies: “uses on-device machine learning to learn your daily charging routine… Allowing the Optimized Battery Charging feature to activate only when your iPhone expects it to be connected to a charger for an extended period of time.”

Charging your phone at night: a practice to absolutely avoid

One of the main reasons why it is not recommended to charge your phone overnight is the significant increase in electricity consumption. On average, a charger consumes about 3.68 watts when charging the phone, and even though this power decreases to 2.24 watts when fully charged, this results in considerable wasted energy for many hours each night.

Fire hazards

Leaving your phone charging overnight carries risks, particularly in the event of overheating. Studies have shown that gas bubbles can form inside the battery during an overcharge, creating pressure that could ultimately lead to an explosion. Without the user being aware, this could start a fire quickly, especially if the smartphone is near flammable materials such as curtains, blankets or other flammable objects.
