I am curious as to why Russia concentrated its firepower on Donbas, following having invaded Ukraine and realizing that it was not easy to occupy the capital Kiiu.
CNN analyzed that Donbass is of great strategic value along with historical and symbolic significance to the Russian regime.

Donbas, eastern Ukraine, where Russia is realigning its ranks and refocusing its firepower.
Since 2014, the Ukrainian government forces and pro-Russian separatists have been fighting a civil war here.
Just before the invasion of Ukraine, Putin approved the independence of the Donetsk People’s Republic of Donetsk and the Luhansk People’s Republic, founded by these separatists.
One of the reasons for the war was to protect the pro-Russian residents in Donbass.
“The special military operation will continue until it is completed, and the planned missions are completed.”
However, the real reason that President Putin is obsessed with Donbass is that Donbass has important political and strategic values along with historical and symbolic meanings to the Russian regime, CNN reported.
Since the late 18th century, Donbas is one of the regions that has been ruled by the Russian Empire under the name of ‘Novorosiya’, which means ‘New Russia’.
It was a historical symbol of the Russian Empire expanding to the west.
Since then, the Novorosya region has grown into the industrial center of the former Soviet Union, serving as a gateway to the outside world along the Black Sea.
Samir Puri, a senior researcher at the Institute for International Strategic Studies, a British think tank, said, “It is highly likely that Putin’s intention is to divide Ukraine by occupying Donbas. It will be a sufficient achievement to suppress the critics.”
President Putin should achieve achievements that prove his victory at home and abroad before the Victory Day in World War II next month.
