Italy is facing a significant influx of migrants, including the arrival of 8,500 people on the island of Lampedusa in just three days at the beginning of the month. Why this peak in arrivals? Is this new?
“There have been arrivals of migrants in Lampedusa for almost twenty years now. It’s clear that it’s always linked to what’s happening in Africa,” explains Valérie Dupont, RTS correspondent in Italy. .
“In recent months, there has been a lot of instability in African countries: coups d’état, military takeovers, also the earthquake in Morocco and the problems in Libya and therefore depending on what “it’s happening in Africa, the masses of migrants are changing”.
“This year, there are already more than 130,000 migrants on the Mediterranean route. But for example, in 2010, during the Arab Spring, 10,000 migrants arrived on the island in a few days. These are therefore situations that we have already seen,” adds the journalist.
The most traveled migratory route currently is that from Tunisia
Valérie Dupont, RTS correspondent in Italy
“For several years, the Libyan migratory route was the most traveled. Today, migrants come mostly from Tunisia. Thus, they cross all of West Africa, the desert, Niger”, analyzes Valérie Dupont .
“They then arrive in Tunisia where sometimes they even stay for several years. But many migrants have decided to leave the country, because the situation in Tunisia has degenerated in recent months. There have been cases of violence, cases of racism “, she explains.
What has changed in Italian migration policy since Giorgia Meloni came to power?
