why flickering is a problem and how Honor fixes it

OLED screens have stood out for their exceptional brightness, infinite contrast, vibrant colors and energy efficiency. However, not everything is perfect: the flickering, although often invisible, can cause visual fatigue in some users. And while most manufacturers overlook this issue, Honor is an exception.

Today, most smartphones have adopted OLED technology for their screens. It is undeniable that these screens offer many advantages: high brightness, infinite contrast, vibrant colors, good viewing angles, not to mention their energy efficiency.

However, this technology does not come without some flaws. In particular, the flickering of OLED screens, often imperceptible to the naked eye, can cause visual fatigue among users.

The issue of flickering OLED screens

What is most disturbing is that many smartphone manufacturers continue to neglect this issue. They have not yet adopted dimming technologies to protect users’ eyes.

In fact, most flicker frequencies above 300 Hz are generally undetectable to the human eye. However, below this limit, flicker may become noticeable, depending on the degree of modulation.

And be careful, even if the flicker is not visible, it does not mean that it cannot cause discomfort. Among smartphone users, those who complain regarding OLED technology frequently mention this issue. Their PWM frequencies (Pulse Width Modulation, pulse-width modulation) are often above 300 Hz, but the degree of modulation is very high, causing a choppy amplitude curve in the measurements. So the flicker may not be visible, but it still causes discomfort.

In the face of these challenges, Honor has demonstrated significant progress. The Chinese brand relies on particularly high PWM dimming to alleviate the discomfort associated with flickering. For example, its Magic V2 and Honor 90 models use PWM dimming up to 3,840 Hz.

As to Magic 5 Pro, it relies on 2160Hz PWM dimming. This technology is part of the BOE-Q9 panel, and is also used in other models such as the Vivo X90 Pro.

The Magic 5 Pro model currently offers the highest dimming frequency on the market. Although it is not yet completely flicker-free, TÜV Rheinland and the Dxomark platform have both certified this smartphone as flicker-free.
