“Why Female Astronauts Are More Efficient in Space Exploration: Study Reveals Surprising Findings”

Researchers from the European Space Agency’s Aerospace Medicine Team in Germany conducted a study published in Scientific Reports, which found that female astronauts had lower water requirements for hydration, as well as total energy expenditure, oxygen (O2) consumption, carbon dioxide (CO2) consumption and metabolic heat production during Space exploration missions compared to their male counterparts.

According to Phys, the study included the effects of body size and countermeasures on estimates of life support resources during all-female manned exploration missions, and the team used an approach developed to estimate the effects of body “size” on life support requirements in Astronauts Males too, and the estimates for females were lower than for male astronauts.

The study found that when considering the limited space, power, weight, and life support systems packed into a spacecraft on a long mission, the female form is the most efficient body type for space exploration.



According to NASA, the cost of transporting payloads to the International Space Station is $93,400 per kilogram, and the study found that on a 1,080-day mission, a crew of just four all-female crew would require 1,695 kilograms less of food.

Using some simple math, the mission could save over $158 million and free up 2.3 cubic meters of space (food packaging), which is roughly 4% of the habitable volume (60 cubic meters) of the HALO “gateway” module in orbit. Lunar proposed by NASA.

The study data indicates that there may be several operational advantages to female crews during future human space exploration missions, and suggests that this may occur in future missions.
