Do we really need to re-explain the extent to which excessive sugar consumption can ultimately deteriorate health? It increases the risk of overweight, obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (among other pathologies). However, with 48 kilos per year per person, or the equivalent of 23 small pieces per day, Belgians rank third in the world as the largest consumers of sugar, according to the FAO, and shatter this WHO recommendation: do not let all sugars exceed 10% of daily caloric intake.
