Totally out of Tom Thibodeau’s rotation, Evan Fournier should not make old bones with the Knicks. Still under contract, the back is aware that he will probably be traded during the offseason.
What a nightmare season for Evan Fournier. Only 27 games played, his lowest stats since his rookie year (6.1 points in 17 minutes, 34% shooting, 31% from afar) and above all a disappearance in good and due form from Tom Thibodeau’s plans. Back from EuroBasket with the Blues, the kid from Charenton had yet attacked the season in the shoes of a holder. Seven games later, he saw Quentin Grimes go past him, before gradually sliding to the end of the bench. No small feat for someone who has played the majority of his career in the starting lineup.
Having not even seen the floor for a single second in the Playoffs, Evan Fournier knows that he is at the end of the road in New York and that his management no longer counts on him. He expects to be traded and has entrusted it to Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News.
“You know I’m not coming back. There’s no way they [les Knicks, ndlr] keep me. I would be very surprised if they did. We will see. It’s not me who decides”.
It must be said that between his playing time and his contractual situation (still linked until 2025 but with a club option for the last year), Fournier is a logical candidate at the start. New York will not have big resources to strengthen itself at the Free Agency but the 18 million per year of the Fournier deal might be useful in the context of an exchange. His name had already circulated at the time of the trade deadline.
“I mean wouldn’t you be surprised if I came back? Eleven years in the League, a big contract, they are obviously trying to develop young people. I haven’t played this year, so why bring me back?”
With RJ Barrett, Quentin Grimes and a Josh Hart who should most likely extend the adventure to the Knicks, it does indeed seem complicated to reverse the balance for Evan. It remains to be seen now what the plans of the New York management will be and which franchise will offer the sniper of the Blues a chance to bounce back.
