Why Energy Bills Are Likely to Rise Again: Exposing Luminus’ High Charges and Unfair Practices

The cost of your energy bill should start to rise once more in the coming weeks: “I don’t imagine prices can go down”

Today, Test-Achats denounces Luminus’ practices following dozens of complaints received. Some mention regularization bills of almost… €11,000! “Dozens of Luminus customers have contacted us because they recently received a particularly high regularization bill in which they had to pay thousands of euros in surcharges. The fixed contracts at very expensive prices offered from the third quarter of 2022 are the common thread of these testimonies,” indicates the consumer defense association.

One testimony is particularly interesting, that of Mieke Schorreels, who received a regularization invoice for €10,489 at the end of July. “As we were paying a deposit of €344 each month, I called Luminus several times to ask if everything was in order and why we had to pay so much because we had solar panels. I was always told everything was in order and we just had to wait for the final bill. The last time I spoke on the phone with a Luminus employee, I received a response that literally knocked my socks off: I was accidentally told that I would receive a bill for at least 11 000 € and that my price per kWh was much too high and that I should have changed my contract!”

But how was she able to arrive at such amounts? “We are talking regarding relatively high electricity consumption due to storage heating in combination with one of the most expensive permanent contracts ever seen at Luminus,” says Test-Achats.

Julie Frère, spokesperson for Test-Achats, completes these comments: “We have not planned legal action once morest Luminus, but we tried to obtain a commercial gesture because customers were not properly informed . This was refused, but we continue to work to try to find a solution.”

On the Luminus side, we defend ourselves once morest the slightest scam. “We of course understand the concerns regarding high final bills for customers who opted for fixed rates in September 2022. With hindsight, we see that this choice was not the most advantageous. It is obviously easier to express oneself following the fact, communicates Stéphane Cornet, spokesperson for the supplier. However, we would like to point out that we have fully informed customers when prices have dropped and that we have done everything we can to encourage them to switch to a lower price. We did it in every way possible.”

Energy: for Test-Achats, there is no longer any hesitation, “it’s time to conclude a fixed contract before the end of August”
