Fast forward to today, and the 2023 Wrangler fares slightly better than its predecessor in reliability ratings, with a score of 2 out of 5 in Consumer Reports’ predicted reliability rating (the 2014 model scored 1 out of 5).
The new Wrangler’s low points are once again due to its “stiff ride” and poor fuel economy (21 mpg combined).
Over the years, there have been 41 NHTSA safety recalls for various Wrangler models for problems ranging from minor to dangerous. Jeep has issued four recalls for the 2023 Wrangler.
The first was in October 2022, when the vehicle was recalled amid concerns about the electrical system, as the Wrangler 4xe’s battery overheating posed a driving safety risk.
The second was in December 2022, when Jeep recalled the 2021 through 2023 Jeep Wrangler 4XE models due to concerns that the engine could shut down unexpectedly while driving.
The third recall was issued in March 2023 for a possible fire hazard due to an unused bolt that could puncture the fuel tank in an accident. The fourth recall was issued in August 2023 due to an obstructed brake light on certain 2023 models.
The 2022 Wrangler has two open recalls due to possible engine stalls and compromised side marker lights. Meanwhile, the 2020 model has a whopping 7 recalls, suggesting there’s a good chance this model could go wrong.
Buyers should beware of the risks, no matter how tempting the price of one of these used Wranglers may seem. One of those recalls affects approximately 3,000 Jeep Wranglers as far as axles are concerned.
