Why Does Caps Lock Lag on MacBook Keyboards? Solutions and Explanations Revealed

I’ll ruin everything for you now. Do you have a MacBook? This means your Caps Lock on your keyboard is laggy. Don’t believe me? Check it out. Hit it now. Didn’t catch fire. Now live with it. But why does this happen? Caps Lock has been slowing down on all existing MacBooks for at least 20 years, and nothing has changed. It can’t be that this is a banal bug that has survived so many reincarnations of macOS and Apple laptops themselves. The answer is actually not simple. But it can be treated. Why Caps Lock is slow on Apple computers No one knows. And who knows, he still hasn’t told. I’m serious. There is no documented, verified reason why the Caps Lock key takes a while to activate on any Mac. There is also no clearly defined moment when this key behavior became the norm in Apple desktop operating systems. A common theory that sounds quite logical goes like this. The delay was added a long time ago with extremely good intentions: to reduce the number of accidental button presses, leading to an unwanted change in the printing mode from uppercase to uppercase or vice versa. The theory is supported by the fact that pressing Caps Lock for a little longer than just a momentary “tap” always works correctly. Against the theory, I note that it is very difficult to miss Caps Lock. At least in more than 10 years of touch typing, I have not encountered such a problem in any OS. But it may be that I simply don’t notice it – precisely because of the delay prudently added by someone unknown to macOS. By the way, the Ubuntu OS also has a Caps Lock delay by default. And on some Windows laptops there is also a delay when pressing. But this is a different case – it is only due to the fact that the manufacturer supplies pre-installed software that intercepts the signal and displays the register change on the screen. This was done due to the absence of an LED indicator in the caps key. How to turn off Caps Lock activation delay in macOS 1. The easiest way: System Preferences → Keyboard → Text Input → Edit. Next, turn on and then turn off the toggle switch “Use the Caps Lock key to switch…”. For some reason, after this the “lag” disappears until the next system reboot, although theoretically it shouldn’t. This is a real bug, unlike the default behavior of Caps Lock. But we won’t complain about him. 2. Here is another method once and for a long time, but it entails other consequences. Go to System Preferences → Accessibility → Keyboard and turn on the Slow Keys toggle switch. Then click on the i button opposite it and drag the Delay until the keys are activated slider all the way to the left. The delay in activating Caps Lock will disappear, but other problems will appear. The movement of the cursor in the text along the arrows will slow down greatly, and if you type very, very quickly, the system will begin to skip entering some keys. 3. Finally, you can download the open source program Karabiner Elements. She is already ten years old. There, in addition to fine-tuning the keyboard, you can remove the delay in pressing Caps Lock. PS I would be glad to find out the root cause and moment when this delay appeared in macOS, but several days of searching the Internet did not bring me an answer. If you have an answer and proof, write in the comments – we will all be grateful. ???? Do you want more? Read more on Telegram ???? Looking for an answer to a question? Come to the iPhones.ru Forum.
