Who has never had this unpleasant feeling that comes without warning? Have the trembling eyelid can happen anytime and there is an explanation for it.
If it is a painless phenomenon, it is nonetheless disturbing. HLN asked ophthalmologist Virginie Ninclaus from UZ Gent regarding the origins of twitching eyelids and what can be done regarding it.
Why do we have the eyelid that trembles?
“Everything regarding that moving eyelid is related to the seventh cranial nerve or ‘facial nerve.’ This nerve controls the muscles of the eyelid. If this nerve is overactive, the eyelid suddenly begins to tremble,” explains the ophthalmologist.
The causes ? Most of the time, stress and fatigue trigger this phenomenon. An excess of caffeine or an allergy can also be the cause.
In the first case, rest and relaxation are the solution. In the second, it is enough to drink less coffee. Regarding the allergy, this can for example come from contact lenses.
Finally, if the problem persists, the expert explains: “We solve an eyelid spasm by injecting small amounts of botox into the eyelid. These injections reduce the activity of part of the muscle. Thus, the eyelid begins to twitch less often, while the rest of the eye can continue to function perfectly. Botox fades on average following four months. It is therefore necessary to repeat the operation regularly. Fortunately, our health authorities do not consider this form of botox to be aesthetic, so a large part of the amount is reimbursed”.
