Every April 17th we celebrate World Malbec Day, one of the most recognized strains by lovers of wine culture. Although this variety is of French origin, it is impossible to talk regarding it without thinking regarding Mendoza, Argentina; town that saw this strain flourish in America, and where today its harvest has taken on great relevance by producing fruity wines with intense color.
However, Malbecs of French origin are also highly recognized; especially because they are more structured, powerful wines with a more pronounced acidity.
Commemoration of the Strain
If we want to talk regarding history, I want to tell you regarding the origin of World Malbec Day. Which dates back to 1853, when the then president of Argentina, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, contemplated the creation of an agronomist project that would be presented on April 17 before the Provincial Legislature of Mendoza.
This proposed incorporating new strains into the country to elevate its wine industry; For this reason, the French agronomist Michel Aimé Puget was hired as director, who brought with him, among other varieties, Malbec.
Let’s talk regarding Malbec
Malbecs are very popular worldwide. Although each bottle has its own characteristics, a wine from this strain usually has an aroma of plum and blackberry, while on the palate there are notes of black fruits and even spices such as cloves and vanilla due to the aging in oak.
These characteristics, together with its great versatility, mean that the strain can pair with a wide variety of dishes, making it advisable to accompany it with red meats, as well as duck, lamb and pasta with tomato sauce. It is important to note that these are not the only pairing options, it is also recommended to combine with other dishes, for example, hamburgers and empanadas.
Malbec thus becomes an ideal wine for any occasion, a safe bet to give as a gift or take with us to a gathering, its flavor will delight anyone.
