Why do some people experience motion sickness in virtual reality games?

2023-05-02 05:00:03

Virtual reality (VR) games provide an immersive experience for users, who can control movements through specific accessories such as glasses and motion controls. But some players end up not adapting and feel nauseous.

Researchers at the University of Waterloo, Canada, found that digital nausea, disorientation and vertigo – also known as cybersickness or cybersickness, in English – is related to the sensory conflict that some people have with exposure to virtual reality.

The severity of cybernetic illness would be affected by how the senses adjust to the conflict between physical and virtual reality, according to the study published April 1 in the journal Virtual Reality.

To reach the conclusion, the researchers evaluated the subjective visual vertical (SVV), measure of how individuals perceive the orientation of vertical lines, of 31 people before and following they played two virtual reality games of high and low intensity.

Those who had less motion sickness were more likely to have a greater change in their ability to perceive verticality following exposure to virtual reality, particularly in high-intensity games. On the other hand, those with higher levels of cybersickness were less likely to change the way they perceived vertical lines.

“This knowledge can be invaluable for developers and designers of virtual reality experiences, allowing them to create more comfortable and enjoyable environments for users,” says Department of Kinesiology and Health Sciences Professor Michael Barnett-Cowan.
