Why do several mayors of the country appear in socks on social networks?

The Muco association, an association mobilized for people with cystic fibrosis in Belgium, is launching a campaign on Monday to support research once morest this disease. No less than 180 Belgian mayors, including Paul Magnette and Bart De Wever, support this action by wearing #mucosocks, on sale during the campaign, to encourage fundraising.

A little more than 1,300 Belgians are affected by cystic fibrosis, an incurable genetic disease. Symptoms have a huge impact on patients’ daily lives, and therapies to treat them can take up to four hours a day. Affected individuals have reduced lung capacity due to infections and inflammation of the lungs.

These patients also suffer from other severe digestive problems. The life expectancy of these patients is on average between 43 and 53 years. The Muco association is taking advantage of European Cystic Fibrosis Week from November 21 to 27, 2022 to carry out its fundraising campaign through the sale of socks. These colorful stockings for children or adults can be ordered online for 10 euros each, via the campaign website (https://www.mucoweek.be).

To encourage action, 180 mayors across the country wear #mucosocks themselves. The profits from the sale of these socks are dedicated to research once morest cystic fibrosis in Belgium. “With current treatments, we can prevent, delay or alleviate the symptoms of CF. But daily care is still very expensive in terms of time, energy and money. Scientific research for more effective treatment methods, or even a cure, is therefore of great importance. It also gives hope for a better and longer life to those affected. With our sale of socks, we support this research in the hope that one day we can eradicate this disease“, says Stefan Joris, director of the Muco association.
