Why did the Tokugawa Shogunate last for 260 years? Historical critic Toshi Kohara says, “This is because Ieyasu’s rules were perfect. One of them was that by deciding that the firstborn would be the heir, he prevented unnecessary disputes over the succession within the Tokugawa family.” .

The great work undertaken by Ieyasu following the fall of the Toyotomi family

On May 7, 1615, the day of the final battle of the Summer Campaign in Osaka finally arrived. A fierce battle unfolds from Mt. Chausu to Osaka Castle, and the castle finally goes up in flames. The following day, May 8, Tokugawa Ieyasu received word that Toyotomi Hideyori and Chacha had committed suicide, and entered the ruins of Osaka Castle. Although he must have been relieved, he must have had more complicated feelings than that.

Nearly a year later, on April 17, 1616, Ieyasu passed away at Sunpu Castle, an eventful life. He was 75 years old. It took less than a year from the time he destroyed the Toyotomi family until his death. However, his health continued to decline following he collapsed on a falconry trip on January 21st, so he was only able to function for regarding eight months.

During that short period, Ieyasu worked tirelessly to perpetuate the rule of the Tokugawa family. Even following the Battle of Sekigahara and following Ieyasu’s appointment as Seii Taishogun, Toyotomi Kogi, who served as an authoritative vassal before many daimyo, has now disappeared from this world. Now was the time to establish Tokugawa kogi, but Ieyasu himself was already quite old at the time. For this reason, I can see the traces of a great deal of haste, trying to do what I can while my eyes are black.

Ieyasu did not return to Sunpu immediately following the Osaka Summer Campaign ended, but stayed at Nijo Castle (Kyoto City) for 115 days. There he held a banquet to celebrate the victory, inviting court nobles and various feudal lords, but the main reason he stayed in Kyoto was to finish the post-war process and the establishment of the postwar system.
