Why did Kamran Shahid write and film a love story on 1971?

A love story set during the fall of Dhaka in 1971, ‘Hoy Tum Ajini’ is Kamran Shahid’s directorial debut.

Kamran Shahid’s name is known as a current affairs prime time anchor in Pakistan for many years. These days he is associated with Dunya News and does the 8 pm show. Many people also know him as the son of Pakistan’s most famous actor film star Shahid.

Very few people know that, before Corona, Kamran had spent many years writing the script of a movie ‘Hoy Tum Ajran’ and then making it, and now that movie is being released on Eid-ul-Fitr this year.

‘Hoy Tum Ajini’ is a love story born in Dhaka University in 1971 when East Pakistan was engulfed in political tension, military operations and then war. According to Kamran Shahid, the writer and director of ‘Hoy Tum Ajini’, this film is a love story that takes place in 1971. It is a complete romantic film.

In my recent visit to Lahore, I tried to meet Kamran Shahid and discuss this film because it is rare that someone in front of the camera works behind the camera.

The first question of Independent Urdu was why did you go behind the camera? On this, Kamran Shahid said that he wrote a story which was a romantic story in the background of the fall of Dhaka in 1971, while the issues related to the incident of 71 in Pakistan become very complicated.

He further explained that ‘so the script is ready, but not everyone is ready to direct this film, then they thought that when it is written by themselves, they enter the field themselves.’

He admits that he has no formal training in filmmaking, and that making a period film is much more difficult because one thing has to be taken care of.

Color grading a film itself has many problems, everything from the actors’ clothes to their hairstyles has to be looked at, so it is a difficult and quite expensive task.

On this issue, Kamran Shahid complained that there are no facilities for the filmmakers in Pakistan, even the filmmakers whose films are released do not get money for many years.

On the choice of this subject, Kamran Shahid said that there are many corners in the context of the events of 1971 in Pakistan which are hidden from the eyes, but if the film was made only on the incident of 1971, the public might not be interested. ‘ is a complete entertainer with around eleven songs. This fall is a combination of dhaka, romance, and songs.

About the main characters, he said that Mikal Zulfikar and Sadia Khan, both have not done such roles till date. Both of them will be seen in this movie, Nizmal Deen and Zeenat. Apart from this, Mehmood Aslam sahib was taken in the role of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman because he is a great actor, then Samina Pirzada in the role of Indira Gandhi, Sohail Ahmed sahib’s role is also amazing.

Kamran Shahid added that Adnan Jilani played the role of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, which though has only one scene but interesting in which he has a dialogue with Sheikh Mujib.

About directing his father Shahid in the film, he said that he worked and there was no problem because he had faith in his script, and everything was done accordingly.

One of the special things about the songs of ‘Hoy Tum Ajiran’ is that Abida Parveen has also sung in it. According to Kamran Shahid, his stipulation was that the song would not be lip-synced to any of the heroines, and the opportunity in the film was such that there was no need for that.

Ali Zafar and Asim Azhar have also sung in it.

Expressing his expectations about the box office of the film, Kamran Shahid said that all the money was invested by Shahid Sahib in Hoy Tum Ajini, which was just used up. Not made for, but made with passion, with not so much calculation.

“The decision to release this film on Eid-ul-Fitr is the decision of its distributor, who is Nadeem Mandviwala.”

On the question of making a film on the sensitive subject of 1971, Kamran Shahid said that the script of this film has not been seen by the army, ISPR or any authority till date. “I made what I wrote, I did not ask anyone, I did not show it, and no one demanded it from me. If this script came from somewhere, at least I would not make this film, every single word of it.” I have my own.’

Kamran Shahid said about taking the help of the army in the production of this film that he got the help of the tank and some other equipment from the army, for which he was requested to be given on rent earlier. It happened that it was not possible, then they asked for help, which was received, and this help was not provided by the army, Pakistan Navy also helped, but at that time the Punjab government, namely Usman Buzdar, also helped a lot.

On the hope of success of this film, he said that he has done his best, the rest depends on Allah and the public because cinema cannot be controlled like TV.
